It’s that time of the year again. In just a little more than a month, the Venetian Carnival will once again be in full swing, populating the Venetian alleyways with masked figures, actors, and visitors hailing from the four corners of the world. This popular yet traditional event is renowned worldwide for the festive, bizarre and at times outlandish atmosphere it creates.

This year’s Carnival will take place between Feb. 17th and March 5th . The main events which will take place in this timeframe are going to be the water parade (Sunday 17th , Feb.), the traditional parade of decked-out boats down the Grand Canal and the Rio di Cannaregio; the Festa delle Marie procession and pageant (Sat 23rd , Feb.). Equally important are the three “flights” from the top of the St. Mark’s Belltower to the plaza below: spectacular Flight of the Angel, or of the Colombina (Sun 24th , Feb.); jocular Flight of the Eagle (Sun 3rd , Mar.); and Carnival’s last hurrah, Flight of the Lion (Tue 5th , Mar.).

During the years, the venetian Carnival has grown in size and fame, becoming a spectacular touristic event which draws in people from all over the world. Besides the aforementioned events (which are described in detail in the following articles), the most important days of the venetian Carnival are Fat Tuesday and Fat Thursday. Top affluences are also recorded during the weekend days.
