The date revives one of the most antique traditions of the Serenissima: The Bride of the Sea, born to underline the supremacy of Venice on sea. Every year the Doge, on the Bucintoro, reached S.Elena where the bishop expected him, on board of a golden-edged boat, and when they would have finally reached together the ports entrance he symbolically threw a golden ring into the sea.
Nowadays the event celebrates those moments with a water procession of traditional oar boats from San Marco to San Nicolò at Lido, where take place the regattas between these and a typical open-air market.
