The Naval Historic Museum
The Naval Historic Museum, founded in 1919, is located in one of the ancient barns in Venice near The Arsenale.
The exhibition area is spread over five floors, for a total of 4,000 square feet, and includes the main building, the Church of San Biagio and ships Pavilion, located in the ancient rowing workshop of the arsenal.
The new management of the Museum was entrusted by the Comune di Venezia sailing, which organizes and manages local events, in collaboration with MUVE, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia Foundation for civic museums in Venice), which immediately has confirmed the extension of visiting hours and put in place a project of valorization of the finds to allow the visitors to enjoy at its best the particular path.
The theme that runs through visiting the Museum weaves (through seafaring traditions, precious finds, ancient maps, navigational instruments) the long and complex plot of naval history in Venice to the shorter but still intense Military Navy.
Deserve a particular mention the shipbuilders’ models replacing the drawn projects: the one survived at the Arsenal sacking of 1797, are exhibited in the Museum and count not only Venetian boats but also models of Italian Navy of yesterday and today to the fishing boats used in East Asian seas.
The Pavilion of ships, open only on Saturdays and Sundays at a scheduled time starting from head office, has some real and original examples of typical Venetian boats, ancient ceremonial gondolas work boats, military boats and race boats.
With the same entrance fee can be visited on request the ancient Church of San Biagio ai Forni, the private chapel of the Italian Navy, which houses the body of Admiral Emo and the heart of Archduke Francesco Federico, Duke of Austria.
Worth to mention that part of the ticket price will be donated to charity at the Andrea Doria Insitute to assist the children of perished Sailors.
