Madonna della Salute
The tradition has its roots in the great pestilence widespread because of the 1630's war against Austria, when the Senate and the Doge voted for building a temple in the name of Virgin Mary as soon as the epidemic was eradicated.
After the pestilence was gone, in 1631, the promise was kept; the temple was built, based on the project of the architect Longhena. Since it was inaugurated the 21st of November, this date remained a key moment in the Venetian tradition.
Since then, this feast is celebrated every year with a procession guided by the Patriarch that starts from Saint Mark's square and, crossing a boat bridge built on Gran Canal, solemnly reaches Chiesa della Salute.
Thousands of Venetians go to ask for the Virgin Mary's grace outside the church, gleaming through hundreds of candles brought by the faithful people. Along the path and in front of the church there are various stands selling candles and sweets of all kinds.
