The 58th Art Biennale will take place in Venice starting next May. The exhibition is called “May you Live in Interesting Times” and will be held from May 11th to November 24th.

Aside from the pun, the tagline comes from a Chinese proverb concerning times of crisis and disorder, such as those we are living though now.

The event will be curated by Ralph Rugoff, director of the Hayward Gallery of London. The main theme of the Biennale is the pleasure derived from uncertainty and discovery: according to the director, the exposition will highlight an approach to making art that combines the critical consideration of art pieces to the more personal dimension of enjoying art as such. In short, Rugoff wants to offer the public a pleasant experience, drawing the public into the art world through a series of encounters.

The exhibition will underline the fundamental idea that the meaning of an art piece does not reside in the exhibit itself, but rather in the “conversation” among the artist, the piece, and the public.
