Sant_Antonin_visitaGEP.gifThere are 27 churches in the sestiere of Castello; only Cannaregio (with 32) has more.  San Zaccaria is a must because of its drop-dead gorgeous Bellini altarpiece, but there’s much else to see including a nice gothic chapel and a crypt that you can visit.

Another favorite is San Francesco della Vigna with its beautiful Madonna by the Franciscan friar Antonio da Negroponte, another mysterious artist. This is his only known painting. If you’re only going to bat once, you might as well knock it out of the park as he did. A similiar artist is Cima da Conegliano with his Baptism of Christ that's on the high altar of San Giovanni in Bragora.

San Giorgio degli Schiavoni is a former scuola and church that’s now a museum; it contains some of the most important paintings in Venice – the Carpaccio cycle which includes St. George and the Dragon and St. Augustine in his Study.

You can use the Chorus Pass churches in this sestiere in San Pietro di Castello and Santa Maria Formosa.

To day we would like to present you a non well kown church : Sant' Antonin.

This deconsecrated church was closed until this year but after a long work of restauration the city is proud to open it again.

This church has been founded by the Badoer Family in the VIIth Century.  It had the plan of a Basilica until the XVIth Century but the structure has been modified and appears today more simple.

Inside you can see a curiosity : the "Barco" or, as called in Venice, the "Coro delle Matrone", is a sort of second floor opened onto the internal part of the church where now is the organ but where before were standing the women to assist to the mass.

Many artists decored the church like Alessandro Vittoria, Sebastiano Ricci, Jacopo Palma and Lorenzo Tiepolo.

After 20 years of restauration the church is open to visits every saturday from 10:00 a.m to single tourists but also to groups on reservation until 20 people with a guide. The ticket costs 8,00€ and you can visit also the Diocesan Museum.
