The first performance of the opera took place the 24th of November 1812 at the San Moisè Theatre in Venice and initially had a good fame, that made it travel all around Italy and Europe. When the composer died, the opera began to be eclipsed by the much more famous comic operas until it totally disappeared from the repertory . It had a very strong resumption in 1892 at Pesaro, with the centenarian from the composer’s birth. The farce came back on stage in the second half of the 20th century: in 1963 was performed at Scala (with a very young Fiorenza Cossotto playing Ernestina). The first performance at the Rossini Opera Festival was in 1987, and represented the last opera directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, that died the next year (afterwards the direction was remade a few times at ROF and two times at Scala, in 1988 and in 2010). The opera, even if not part of the usual repertory, counts even nowadays a respectable number of performances in Italy.
The concertmaster and director is Matteo Beltrami. Orchestra del Teatro la Fenice and Orchestra del Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello di Venezia.
