The Sestiere of Santa Croce is the smallest of the city, it is the only one that can be reached by car and is directly linked to the mainland by the Ponte della Libertà (a bridge across the lagoon).
It borders to the Sestiere of San Polo and Dorsoduro and the lagoon, two of the four bridges
Crossing the Grand Canal are here, the “ constitution “ aka Calatrava bridge and the Scalzi Bridge.
Its name comes from a part of the Saint cross of Jerusalem, a piece was conserved into a church then demolished by Napoleon.
On this part of the city it is possible to find out sings of the past, there are many museums, churches and monuments, as well sings of a less distant past, it is the part of the city that has changed more during the XX century, the building of the “ Ponte della Libertà “ (the bridge to the mainland) and the recent Constitution bridge, and people mover.
