San Marco District

The Sestiere of Saint Marks is the oldest and most famous of the whole city of Venice, everything started from here. In the beginning it was called Rivoalto (from here the name Rialto) it is referred to the islands where the area was built, its fulcrum is Saint Marks, a place that for more than thousand years has been the political and administrative centre of the Venetian Republic.

The Sestiere is washed by Canal Grande on its northern side, to the east it borders with Castello and Cannaregio, it is linked to the Sestiere of San Polo by the Rialto bridge and to Dorsoduro by Accademia bridge, part of the sestiere is the isle of San Giorgio too. The resident of the quarter are few, at the end of 2007 they were only 4236, just because most of the palaces host touristic or touristic related activities. Sadly this is the price to pay for its beauty and wonderful art operas.

La Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana - Venezia

The Sansoviniana library as known as National Marciana Library is one of the biggest and most important library in Italy. It is in Saint Marks square, in front of the Dogipalace.

Teatro la Fenice - Venezia

The Fenice Theatre is one of the best known not just in Venice but worldwide. It was designed in 1790 by Giannantonio Selva commissioned by a rich and famous drama company. The building was subject of criticism mainly for the positions (in saint Mark’s area, campo San Fantin) and for its Neoclassic style.

Ponte dell'Accademia sul Canal Grande - Venezia

The Accademia bridge was built during the Austrian dominium (1848-1866) as well the Scalzi bridge. Until then the only bridge spanning over the grand canal was the Rialto one.

Piazza San Marco - Venezia

Saint’Marks Square is surely a place that can’t be missed, an exhibition of rare and unique beauty appear on a 360° view in front of the visitors, the Saint Mark’s Church, the bell tower, the “procuratie” and the Napoleonic wing, the clock tower and the two blacks.
