Cannaregio District

As well as the Sestiere of Castello it is the largest and populated quarter of the city, it takes the whole northern part of the city, it is delimited by the Lagoon, the Grand Canal and the Castello and Saint Mark Sestiere. The Cannaregio canal is the most important water way of the quarter right after the Grand Canal and it is the only inner canal crossed by the ACTV (public transport company) boats. Also Cannaregio is linked to the mainland by a bridge, it is the long railroad bridge from the Santa Lucia Train station to the mainland.

Its name come probably by the fact that here there where many reed thicket. This appear also on a book date 1410. This is a popular quarter of Venice, well know for the presence of the Jewish getto (the oldest in Europe). The majority of the operas in this part of the city can be admired inside  churches.

Teatro Malibran Venezia

The Malibran Theatre was built by Grimani brothers from Santa Maria Formosa at the end of 1677 the works took only 4 month and it was erected in place of the old house of Marco Polo.

Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth - Venezia

This church is beside the train station, in front of the barefoot bridge It is called also the barefoot church) and it faces the Grand Canal.

The bell tower of Santi Apostoli Church - Venice

This building can be found on the homonymous square, on the beginning of Strada Nova that goes from Rialto to the train station.

San Geremia ChurchChiesa di San Geremia

Inside the district of Cannaregio, just few minutes walking far from the Santa Lucia train station, you can find the beautiful church of San Geremia.

The jewish Ghetto

The ghetto is in Sestiere of Cannaregio not far from Santa Lucia railway station, it was imposed by Serenissima Republic of Venice a residence for the Jews population in 1500.

Facing the grand Canal, the most important water way of the city, the building was commissioned by the Venetian merchant Marino Contarini between 1421 and 1440. the works were made by Contarini Himself and the building has more than one Architect.
