Venice and its door on the mainland: the "Sestiere di Santa Croce"
Discover Cannaregio District
The Biennale history begins in 1895, with the first contemporary Art Expo (counts now 53 editions). the Cinema’s first exhibition was held in 1932, the first ever organized, ...
... whilst in 1980 the Biennale of Architecture and in 1999 the Biennale Dance were added.
The Saint Elena’s Gardens in the Castello Sestiere are the historical head-quarters of the Art Biennale since 1895. Beside the original pavilion (restored several times and now named Padiglione Italia) are now 29 new expo pavilions built in several areas of the park by the exhibiting nations (the city hall is studying a project to build some more). The pavilions themselves are art operas, amongst the designers there are names such as Aalto, Hoffmann, Rietveld, Scarpa and Stirling. The Nations that have no pavilion expose their operas in other areas around the historical centre, it is said that the Biennale involves the whole city, it couldn’t be truer.
Other expo sites are the Corderie and the Arsenal Artiglierie (Artilleries), those areas have been restored to host this event and others and to save an important part of the City.
The Corderie are circa 6400 square meters and were built in 1303 and lately restructured under a project by Antonio da Ponte between 1579 and 1585. The place was made to the manufacture of ropes and similar they are connected with the Artiglierie ,artillery, (3300 squared meters of surface).
There is also an external expositive area along the buildings.
