Venice and its door on the mainland: the "Sestiere di Santa Croce"
Discover Cannaregio District
The Fenice Theatre owes its name to the homonymous mythological bird (the Phoenix) that resurrects from its own ashes. The theatre was
... burned down several times(the last time in 1996) and was rebuilt every time. The first building is dated 1790 on a project by Gian Antonio Selva. The works were made quite fast to avoid criticism and to keep as low as possible the expenses (400.000 Golden Ducati).
It was inaugurated on May 16th 1792 with the Games of Agrigento by Giovanni Paisiello. The first fire is dated 1863 and the theatre was completely destroyed. The reconstruction, very similar to the original one, was attended by Tommaso and Giambattista Meduna.
During the XIX century it has been the stage of many lyric operas prime, worth to be mentioned are operas by Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi.
At the moment it is the most important lyric theatre in Venice, as well as the seat of an International Festival of Contemporary music.
