Venice and its door on the mainland: the "Sestiere di Santa Croce"
Discover Cannaregio District
St. Mark’ s Square is the only “square” in Venice, all others are called campo. Heart of the City and symbol of the ancient Serenissima Republic of Venice...
...once it was site of both politic and religious authority. Saint Mark’ s Square is the most important monumental part of the City.
In St. Mark’s square rises the Bell Tower, completely rebuilt as the original, after falling down in 1902 and reopened in 1912; the Doge's Palace , house of the Doge (equivalent of a powerful prime minister, however not a king) flanked by the impressive Church of Saint Mark and the Patriarch Palace, the “procuratie vecchie e nuove” (translated as new and old Attorneys Palace) and the Marciana library (Marciana means St.Mark's), and the two columns of Marco and Todaro facing the basin. On the top of the columns there are two statues, one representing a lion (the St. Marks symbol that looks like an oriental chimera), the other is the statue of Todaro holding high the “gorgone's beheaded head”, a mythological creature with snakes instead of hair. The legend says that the sight of the snakes could blind a person forever.
