Venice and its door on the mainland: the "Sestiere di Santa Croce"
Discover Cannaregio District
The squero is a shipyard typical of Venice and Veneto in genre, several sort of boat were hand crafted by skilled artisans (gondola, pupparini, sandoli) sadly those are almost extinct.
In Venice some are still working, the most famous one is the squero di
San Trovaso, in the Sestiere of Dorsoduro. The squero is facing the
homonymous canal, and is peculiarity is to look exactly like a mountain
resort, this made of it unique in Venice.
This building choice is due to the origin of the wood and of various technical reasons.
The squero of San Trovaso is very old (600) in the beginning the
production was various, mainly small boats, actually it only for
crafting and repairing gondolas (one of the city symbols).
In the past the squeros were spread all around the city specially on
the Dorsoduro, Castello and Giudecca areas. Today only 5 are in use,
only two of them still craft boats regularly.
